Title: PhD student in immunology/dendritic cell biology (m/f/x)

Location: Faculty of Medicine – Biomedical Center

Deadlines: 30.10.2022

Start date: As soon as possible

Full-time / Part-time: Part-time (65%)

Remuneration group: TV-L

Your tasks and responsibilities:

We are looking for a PhD student to help us investigate how maternal inflammation during pregnancy influences dendritic cell development and function in offspring. Infections and metabolic changes during pregnancy can predispose offspring to the development of inflammatory disorders and chronic diseases, but the influence of the intrauterine environment on disease programming in offspring is unclear. Dendritic cells sense pathogens and damage and subsequently initiate immune responses. We will investigate how dendritic cells in offspring are affected by maternal inflammation. The candidate will employ "fate mapping" in transgenic mouse models, single cell technologies (transcriptomics, epigenetics and flow cytometry), as well as functional analyses of dendritic cells in vitro and in vivo in steady state and after inflammation.

Your qualifications:

  • A strong background in immunology or cell/molecular biology
  • Enthusiasm for innate immunity and immune development
  • Expertise in any of the above-mentioned techniques
  • Prior experience in R or Python is a plus
  • Proficiency English is required, proficiency in German is a plus

Benefits:

  • An enthusiastic international team in a dynamic research environment
  • A diverse range of tasks associated with a high degree of responsibility
  • Offers to support compatibility of family and work
  • Part-time position, salary based on German public service scale (TV-L)

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.

Remuneration group: TV-L E13

Full-time / Part-time: Part-time (75%)

The contract for this position shall initially be fixed at three years. The employment contract may subsequently be extended by up to two years.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conducting scientometric research; possible topics include: analyzing the unequal research output across research institutions, visualizing (inequalities in) research performance, analyzing the CVs of more or less outstanding and successful researchers, explaining disparities in research performance and career paths, and investigating systematic biases in the evaluation of research performance (such as possible biases owing to the gender of the researchers and/or evaluators).
  • Collaboration on service-related activities relating to scientometrics within the Administrative Headquarters of the MPG.
  • Teaching few courses at the Department of Sociology (~ one per year).

Your qualifications:

You have an outstanding university degree (Diploma or Master's degree from a university) in sociology or a neighbouring discipline (e.g., psychology, statistics or computer science). You specialized in empirical social research methods and statistics during your studies. In addition, you are confident in using statistical programs (e.g., Stata, R and/or SAS). Knowledge of SQL and experience with at least one modern programming language are highly desirable. Excellent command of English and rudimentary German skills are other prerequisites for this position. Expertise in social science theories of science and/or social inequalities, such as theories on cumulative advantage, biased evaluations or discrimination, is helpful.

Benefits:

Your place of work is situated in the centre of Munich and is easily accessible via an excellent public transport network. We offer extensive further education opportunities, such as participation in colloquia, workshops, and conferences. At LMU Munich you will be part of a large team of pre- and post-doc researchers focusing on the analytical research of inequality.
